Modified Barium Swallow Test in Hickory, North Carolina
If you have a swallowing disorder, your treating physician or speech therapist may confirm the diagnosis by way of a modified barium swallow test. During an MBS procedure, the following will occur:

  • You will consume a liquid containing barium.
  • As the barium solution moves through your digestive tract, it will be followed via X-ray.
  • Generally speaking, you are strapped to a table that tilts, so the person performing the test can see how the barium travels through different areas.
  • Depending on the extent of the testing, you may be asked to consume more barium to see where it travels.

In most cases, one of these tests takes anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes to complete.
